While visiting Rome one of the staples of their cuisine you must try is gelato. Essentially, gelato is Italian ice cream with a few differences from a standard ice cream. The fact that there are over 2,000 gelaterias in Rome should be a testament to the awesomeness of this Italian dessert.
Sometimes richness doesn’t mean more flavor. Typical ice cream has between 18 and 26 percent butterfat, gelato typically has less than 10 percent. With less butterfat, gelato is not as frozen as regular ice cream so as it melts in your mouth faster you pick up the flavor almost immediately. Another difference is that gelato has a higher density than ice cream, as there is no air added to it when it is mixed. Typically ice cream manufacturers add air to their product so that it nearly doubles the actual quantity of the ice cream. The result of adding no air to gelato actually gives it a richer, creamier taste.
With so many gelaterias to choose from in Rome, where does one go? Coconut Club Vacations invites you to come with us as we explore a few of the best places to grab a couple scoops and sit down to and enjoy the views.
As it would be impossible even on an extended holiday to try all of the thousands of gelaterias that are located in and around the city, you need to narrow it down to just a few of the best. One of the local favorites is Torce’s II. They offer a variety of flavors from the traditional to the more adventurous like black sesame and chili and chocolate. Get the best of both and get two scoops. Fatamorgana is frequented by the natives of the city. Their flavors can be quite adventurous with combinations such as pear and Gorgonzola. Sounds interesting enough, but might be too adventurous for some, so they also stock the staples such as chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio. Comme il Latte, translates to like milk. You must truly love the decadent gelato here as two-thirds of each of their scoops is fresh cream. The flavors will simply melt in your mouth. Try their Sicilian pistachio and top it with melted chocolate and flavored whipped cream for a truly decadent delight.
Eating like the locals is a fantastic way to experience Italy at its finest. Grab a scoop or a cone of your favorite gelato, or be adventurous and try a new flavor and stroll the streets of this beautiful city, you will not be disappointed.
